Does the Water2 Filter Reduce Limescale?

Updated: Jul 10

If you live in Poole, Bournemouth, or Christchurch, you're no stranger to hard water. The high levels of calcium and magnesium in our water supply cause limescale buildup in kettles, taps, and plumbing fixtures. If you're looking for ways to reduce limescale, you might be wondering: Do Water2 filters reduce limescale?

Quick answer

Water2 does not currently advertise its Pod 2.0 as a limescale-reducing filter.

The brand’s current filtration information focuses on reducing chlorine, microplastics, lead and THMs while retaining minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Because these are the minerals responsible for hard water and limescale, we would not choose Water2 specifically to prevent scale inside a kettle.

If limescale is your main problem, an inline filter with a dedicated anti-scale stage may be more suitable. One option is the Maverick Mav 02, which is specifically designed to reduce limescale formation while filtering your cold drinking water.

Our recommendation

  • Water2 primarily for better-tasting water and reductions in chlorine and selected contaminants.

  • Maverick Mav 02 if reducing limescale build-up is an important part of what you want from an inline filter.

  • Reverse osmosis if you want the strongest reduction of the minerals responsible for hard water in your drinking water.

Does Water2 reduce limescale?

Water2 previously published information suggesting that its filter reduced limescale by approximately 10%.

However, they no longer appear to make a specific limescale-reduction claim for the Pod 2.0 on its current product and filtration pages.

Its current information says the Pod 2.0 filters water using activated carbon and retains minerals including calcium and magnesium. These minerals are naturally present in hard water, but they are also what eventually form limescale when water is heated or evaporates.

That means Water2 may improve the taste and smell of your drinking water, but we would not buy it specifically to solve a kettle-limescale problem.

Why Keeping Calcium and Magnesium in Your Water is Good For You

Limescale forms due to calcium and magnesium in hard water - minerals that are essential for our health. While limescale build up on appliances and pipes can be frustrating, these minerals offer important benefits:

  • Calcium: Supports strong bones and teeth, muscle function, nerve transmission, and cardiovascular health. Drinking water with calcium contributes to your daily intake, helping maintain overall well-being.

  • Magnesium: Involved in over 300 biochemical reactions in the body, magnesium supports energy production, muscle and nerve function, and helps regulate blood sugar levels. It’s also linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

The Water2 filter enhances water quality while preserving these beneficial minerals.

What does the Water2 Pod 2.0 filter?

According to Water2’s current published test information, the standard Pod 2.0 reduces:

  • Up to 99.99% of microplastics down to 10 microns

  • Up to 95.28% of chlorine

  • Up to 85.4% of lead

  • Up to 84.4% of THMs

  • Up to 84.4% of chloroform

Water2 states that these figures come from controlled laboratory testing and that actual performance can vary depending on water quality, flow rate and use.

The brand also sells a separate fluoride-filter add-on with additional published reduction claims. Those figures should not be confused with the performance of the standard blue Pod 2.0 on its own.

Should you buy a Water2 filter for limescale?

No — not if reducing limescale is your main goal.

Water2 does not currently advertise the Pod 2.0 as a limescale-reducing filter, and it retains the calcium and magnesium that cause hard water and kettle scale.

It may still be a good choice if your priority is improving the taste and smell of your tap water while retaining naturally occurring minerals.

But if you specifically want to slow down limescale build-up, an inline filter with a dedicated anti-scale stage, such as the Maverick Mav 02, would be a more suitable option.
