Does Hello Klean Work? A Plumber’s Perspective

Updated: Apr 21

If you live in BCP or the south, you’re probably all too familiar with the effects of hard water. Limescale in your shower, dry tight skin, dull or hard to manage hair – sound familiar? As plumbers, we get asked all the time if there’s an easy fix for hard water problems without installing a full water softener. One name that comes up a lot is Hello Klean.

Does Hello Klean actually work?

In short: yes. Based on what we hear from customers day in, day out, people notice a real improvement in how their skin and hair feel after switching to a Hello Klean shower filter. Less dryness, fewer flare-ups, and hair that feels noticeably easier to manage are the most common comments we hear.

How does Hello Klean work?

The Hello Klean shower head 2.0 uses a multi-stage filtration system to reduce impurities commonly found in hard water, such as chlorine, heavy metals (like lead, copper and nickel), sediment and rust.

It doesn’t remove calcium and magnesium completely (so it won’t eliminate limescale entirely), but it can improve water quality enough to make a noticeable difference to hair and skin.

Some of the magic lies in the materials used inside the filter:

Calcium sulphite is particularly effective at removing chlorine, even in hot water. This can make your water feel noticeably gentler on the skin. While it doesn’t remove calcium, it helps stabilise the water’s chemistry, reducing the likelihood of limescale forming.

Ceramic beads work by subtly altering the behaviour of minerals like calcium and magnesium. Often through magnetic or physical interaction, they make these minerals less likely to stick to surfaces – like your showerhead or your hair.

Together, these elements don’t soften water in the traditional sense, but they help to reduce the harshness – especially noticeable when showering.

Who’s it best for?

Hello Klean does work for people with mixer showers, and anyone who wants to invest in reducing the effects of hard water but doesn't want to go all out with a water softener. If you’re noticing dry skin, itchy scalp, or dull hair, this filter could be a low-effort way to see real improvements.

Is it easy to install?

Most people can fit Hello Klean in a few minutes – it’s a simple screw-on job that doesn’t require tools. But if you’ve got a wall-mounted fixed shower head or unusual fittings, you might need an adapter. Still unsure? Drop us a message and we’ll be happy to advise.

Things to keep in mind

We think Hello Klean could be a great option for many households, but there are a couple of trade-offs to consider:

  • It’s not a one-time investment. The filter cartridge needs to be replaced every 2–3 months, depending on use.

  • It may not suit electric showers. In some cases, shower filters can affect water pressure or flow rate, which might shorten the lifespan of certain electric shower models. If you're unsure, check your manufacturer's guidance.

For a simple way to improve your shower water, though, it’s an easy upgrade and a solid choice.
